Requiem: Old Sperryville Bookshop, 1998-2006
It’s always sad to see a local business die–especially when your own blood, sweat and tears have been invested in it. And so, when I visited the Old Sperryville Bookshop today, on the last day of its existence, it felt a bit like sitting casket-side in the funeral home, remembering the good times and thinking about what might have been.

As a resident of Sperryville, I will very much miss the bookstore. Like the corner store, it is (was?) an anchor in the community retail and a place to disappear for an hour or two find that book that “you didn’t know you wanted.” Book signings with local authors, local artwork in the form of notecards by Tom Tepper, and local photographs (disclosure: my photographs & notecards), and a place to catch up with friends whom I would meet while browsing. The owners, Jim & Joan Gannon, Nancy & Greg Ostinato, and associate Linda Thomas were always a font of knowledge about the books, authors, and community gossip. Thank you Jim, Joan, Greg, Nancy, and Linda for all you’ve done and do for the community.
