Rappahannock JV softball record at 1 win, 2 losses

By Sharon Kilpatrick

The The Rappahannock County JV softball team picked up its second loss Thursday against Millbrook, leaving the record for the season at one win and two losses.

The team started the season with a 10-5 win over Warren County, but then lost to Page County 8-0 and to Millbrook 12-6. In spite of the second loss, the young players showed some strong hitting but fielding mistakes plagued them on defense.

Pitcher Megan EarlyLauren Settle started and pitched three innings. Meagan Early came in and finished. Lauren got one strike out and Meagan got three.

Hanna Kopjanski led the hitting with two triples. Laura Caperton had a triple and a double. Brittani Dodson, Megan Early and Lauren Settle each had singles.

Millbrook had accumulated a 6-0 lead in the top half of the third inning. In the bottom half Hanna Kopjanski got her first triple, followed by a double by Laura Caperton that scored Kopjanski. Brinnani Dodson laid down a bunt along the first base line and Caperton got the second Panther run.

There was no scoring in the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fifth with the score still 6-2, Taylor Hitt drew a walk. Then followed an amazing at-bat as Megan Early fouled off 10 pitches before striking out on a called pitch. With two outs, the Panthers picked up three more runs on hits by Lauren Settle, Hanna Kopjanski and Laura Caperton.

However, Millbrook had another big inning in the sixth and increased its lead to 10-5, partly on strong hitting and partly on inept fielding. The Panthers couldn’t counter in their half of the inning. In the top of the seventh, Rapp pulled off a great double play, but then gave up two more runs. The Panthers added the final run in their half of the seventh and final inning for a score of 12-6.

“Our biggest problem is a lack of communication with each other,” Coach Connie Smith said. “Once they start to work together and concentrate, we’ll be OK.”

She and Assistant Coach Mike Early noted that their team is full of eighth graders, while Millbrook’s had mostly sophomores and even some juniors.
