Rappahannock fields track stars
Although host Madison had many more students competing, Rappahannock managed to get some first place wins in a dual meet on Wednesday, April 18.
Sarah Smoot jumped 12 feet in the long jump - not good enough to place, but she won the 400-meter run with a time of 1:13.
Marie Scavetti won the 100-meter dash and the 100-meter hurdles. She anchored the winning Panther relay team with a dramatic come-from-behind finish.
Carly Day was third in shot put at 18′2″ and also third in discus. She also competed in the long jump, hurdles, and 100-Meter dash.
Also competing for the Panther girls were Sally Hutcheson and eighth-graders Emily Williams and Ashley Armor.
For the boys the only first place was Evan Shankle in the shot put with a throw of 34′11″. He was third in the discus with a throw of 91′6″.
Irving Smith was second in the high jump at 5′8″, second in the long jump at 20′ 9 1/2″, and third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.9.
Daniel Rollins was third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12 seconds. He also competed in the high jump and relay team.
Also competing for the boys were Matt Bywaters, Matt Frye and D.J. Atkins in throwing, Brooke Stokes in the dashes and long jump, Jesse Palmer at 400 meters, and Tyler Armor and Reed Dove in the mile run.
Of his team, head track coach Scott Stephens said, “They’re not bad, those that show up for practice. Consistency in practice is the most important thing in the spring sports, especially in track. Some he said miss practice for a variety of reasons including a “shin splint virus,” but there is “a solid core of people who show up. The throwers are consistent.”
The final coat is still missing from the track around the football field at the high school. So the track team can’t yet host any meets. Their next scheduled meet is at 5 p.m. at Clarke County High School on Wednesday, May 2.
