Vick case reveals dog-fighting is widespread

Those of us involved in RAWL, the Rappahannock Animal Welfare League, hope that people in our area do not miss the information that has come along with the allegations of dogfighting directed at famed professional quarterback Michael Vick.

By now, virtually everyone has heard at least something about the charges of vicious cruelty against dogs, and the slaughter of innocent animals, killed only because they lost a fight.

We at RAWL hope that no one misses the small fact that is part of the story: that dogfighting is now more popular in America than ever. That’s right, more Americans (are these really Americans?) are taking part in what Senator Byrd called this “barbaric” activity than at any time in the past.

RAWL is devoted to the care of dogs and cats. At our dog shelter in Amissville, we provide a home for abandoned, unwanted dogs. We do not kill them. If they live with us for months, for years, so be it. They are well-treated, loved by (at least) the humans on our staff.

To us, the headline on the Vick story should include “more than ever”. We are dismayed and disgusted to hear this. Whether you keep a dog or not, whether you even like dogs or not, please think about the savagery being perpetuated. Then, perhaps, pass it on.
