New Rappahannock County citizens’ group, Concerned Taxpayers, meets Thursday to hear from public

A new citizens’ watchdog group is forming to focus on county spending and taxes. The first meeting of Concerned Taxpayers of Rappahannock County will be held at the county Library on Thursday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m.

The new organization grows out of concerns among some citizens that increases in county spending and property taxes are imposing financial hardship among homeowners and taxpayers. At its inaugural meeting, the group will invite public comment and suggestions on these issues and discuss the group’s focus and plans.

The meeting is being called by Tom Junk of Sperryville, one of a small group of organizers looking for ways to influence county decisions relating to budget and taxes. Junk announced the meeting after initially proposing the Concerned Taxpayers group in a letter to The Rappahannock News of Oct. 11, in which he said the group would seek “ideas on ways to improve the use of our tax dollars in Rappahannock, both county and school-wide.”

Junk said the response to his letter was positive, judging from calls and e-mails he received in support of the proposed organization. “I am really pretty encouraged,” Junk told The Rappahannock Voice.

The public is invited to attend the Thursday evening meeting to find out more about Concerned Taxpayers and to offer comment and ideas. For more information, call Tom Junk at (540) 987-8617 or send e-mail to: dzjtfj@msn.com.
