Junior Panther Basketball Teams Get Wins
Both boys and girls Junior Panther teams picked up wins over Mountain View Christian Academy of Winchester in home games Monday, Jan. 28.
The girls went first and ran up an 8-2 lead in the first quarter. The second quarter was a different story, however, as Rapp’s girls were only able to get two more points, while Mountain View was pulling even. Finally at the buzzer Mountain View sank another bucket and took an 11-10 lead into half time.
Rapp was back on track in the third quarter, holding Mountain View scoreless, and ending the period up 23-11. Coaches Jimmy Swindler and Amy Gubler gave subs lots of playing time in the fourth quarter, and Rapp finished up 25-16. Haley Hogan was high scorer with 10 points. Peyton Bailey added eight and Courtney Yowell had seven.
The coaches said poor shot selection was the reason for the second period slump and aggressive defense in the third period pulled Rapp out of it. They were pleased that all the girls got to play in the game. The girls record is six wins and nine losses with four games to go. They have won all but one of their games against teams in the Valley Middle School Conference. Shenandoah Christian Academy is undefeated. Both teams play Bethel Christian at home on Wednesday, games begin at 4 p.m. and Wakefield Country Day School at home on Friday with games again beginning at 4 p.m.
In the boys game Rapp was dominant leading 9-2 at the end of the first quarter and 21-8 at half time. Rapp led 27-12 at the end of the third quarter and won the game 39-15. Coach Rich Hogan gave his subs lots of playing time and was pleased that scoring was spread pretty evenly among many players. Matt Nicholson led the scoring with 10 points.
Coach Hogan says he is happy to be able to play the smaller schools in the Valley Middle School league, and pleased that fifth graders can join in the games giving them valuable playing experience. He believes that will ultimately benefit the high school game.
