Volleyball Varsity Takes Tournament
The state quarter-finalist RCHS varsity volleyball team got a chance to rack up more wins Saturday in the First Annual National Honor Society Volleyball Extravaganza, but not before getting a scare from the faculty team.
Teams from the Quiz Bowl, cross country combined with band, football and volleyball fans who traveled with the varsity team and kept them cheered up also competed, and the championship game was between those fans and the varsity.
The first contest pitted the Quiz Bowl team against the football team. The Quiz Bowl team had a pretty easy time of it winning 25-11.
Then the faculty took to the floor against the volleyball varsity. Varsity scored first and had a 3-1 advantage, but then the faculty began rallying. With soft but accurate serves from government teacher Roger Flinchum and deadly work at the net by phys ed teacher and football coach Michael Williams the faculty kept closing the gap. Finally it dawned on the varsity they had to get the ball over Mr. Williams outstretched arms, but that wasn’t easy. The game featured some classical Elana Kritter and Kim Hutcheson kills, but the score was never a sure thing for the varsity. Still the varsity prevailed 25-21.
The football team redeemed itself in a contest with the combined cross country team and band and won 25-8. The Quiz Bowl team fell to the volleyball varsity by an identical score. The faculty got involved in another tough game but defeated the Quiz Bowl team 25-20. The fans must have defeated some team, but my notes aren’t clear.
However the final game was set up as a contest between the volleyball varsity and their fans. The male fans struggled mightily but fell to the female varsity 25-18. The boys didn’t want to give up and challenged the girls to a 10-point rematch, but again the girls prevailed 10-4.
Final rankings were cross-country sixth place, football fifth place, quiz bowl fourth place, faculty third place, fans second place and varsity first place. The whole evening was lots of fun.
