County Republicans elect new officers, pass resolutions on budget, energy and health-care issues
By Demaris Miller
The Rappahannock County Republican Committee held its mass meeting at the Rappahannock County Court House Tuesday evening, March 18. Special guests included State Senator Mark Obenshain and representatives from the Senate campaigns of Jim Gilmore and Bob Marshall.
The membership of the local committee was reconstituted and new officers were elected. Terry Dixon is the new chairman, Demaris Miller is Vice Chairman, Angela Deavers is Secretary, and Bob Beattie is treasurer.
The meeting elected 19 delegates for the State Convention, to be held May 31, and nine delegates for the 7th District Convention, to be held May 3.
The mass meeting also voted to release three resolutions:
(I) We urge the Federal Government to develop, adopt, and maintain a balanced budget, thereby eliminating deficits, gradually reducing the national debt, and restoring the status of the American dollar in the world.
(II) We urge the Federal Government to develop policies allowing and encouraging the free market to solve America’s desperate energy needs. These policies should include (a) rapid approval of many additional fixed nuclear plants to generate electricity, (b) encouraging the development of plants to transform coal into clean liquid fuels, and ( c ) encouraging exploration of other alternative sources of energy, thereby helping reduce pollution, moving us toward energy independence, and reducing both the cost of fuels and energy within the U.S. and the outflow of dollars to foreign sources.
(III) We urge the Federal Government to encourage the free market, rather than using government, to improve the American health care system to the extent practicable, so as to help make health care affordable and available to all Americans.
As the meeting closed, attendees were reminded that the Republican Committee will hold its Annual Reagan Dinner at the Washington Fire Hall on May 17. Details are available on the Rappahannock Republican website, www.rapprepublicans.com.
