First Annual Lucy Grace 5K Race to Support SIDS Research

The first annual Lucy Grace 5K race will be held in Sperryville, starting at 9 a.m.

Lucy Grace Adams of Sperryville, Virginia was a smiley, sweet, beautiful baby girl whose life was suddenly and tragically cut short when she was a mere nine weeks old. Lucy became one of 2,500 infants who die from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in the United States each year. SIDS is the leading cause of death among infants under one year of age. Despite years of research, this devastating condition remains unpredictable, striking seemingly healthy infants without warning.

Lucy Grace’s story has impacted members of the Sperryville community who wanted to do something to not only commemorate this young soul’s spirit, but to help researchers in their quest to find the cause and ultimately the elimination of SIDS. As a result, they have organized the first annual Lucy Grace 5K Race, which will take place on October 25 at 9:00 a.m. in Sperryville.

“With this race we hope to raise more awareness for SIDS and eventually find a cure for such a heartbreaking affliction,” said Lucy Grace’s mother Tessa Adams. “We want Lucy Grace to be remembered and what better way to do that than with this race that will raise money for the children of our own community and the SIDS Foundation.”

Runners can register online at www.lucygrace5krace.com or on race day between 7:30 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. Registration fees are $20 if paid before October 20th; $25 after or on race day. Checks are payable to RCSSA at P.O. Box 100, Sperryville, VA 22740.

Sponsorships ranging from $100 to $750 are available for businesses and individuals who want to show their support. Organizers are hoping runners from surrounding areas will join the “race for Lucy” and that this first gathering will be a huge success.

“The outpouring of support from our community has been amazing,” said Tessa Adams. “In Lucy Grace’s short presence here with us, she was able to teach how important life is.”

The proceeds from the race will be split between The American SIDS Institute to assist with research and education to one day eradicate SIDS altogether and the Rapphannock County School Sports Association RCSSA to assist with the needs of our own youth in our own community.
