Varsity Wrestling – Coach Jamie Harris reports: “On Jan. 8, the Panther wrestling team hosted RMA, Clarke County, William Monroe, and Fauquier B. The team lost all 4 matches due to missing several starters due to injury and illness. Jeremy Diley went 4-0 with 4 pins, Cody Casey went 3-1, and newcomer Cody Newcamp picked up his first varsity pin over a Fauquier opponent. Also, in an exciting Panther 112 lb match, Carly Day pinned a tough RMA opponent. This was the last home wrestling match for seniors Tyler Armor and Jeremy Diley.
“On Jan. 9, the wrestling team headed north to North Hagerstown High School, MD for the 22nd annual Hub Cup Invitational that featured 18 teams, 17 AAA-size teams from MD and PA. Rapp was the smallest school there and the only Virginia school there as well and finished 17th out of the 18 teams by finishing above AAA Linganore, MD. On day 1, Jeremy Diley advanced to the championship semi-finals by tying a Hub Cup record with an :08 second pin in the opening round against the Gov. Thomas Johnson heavyweight, while Tyler Armor and Cody Casey bounced back from opening round losses with wins to advance to the consolation quarterfinals on Saturday where they lost and were eliminated from the tournament. On Saturday, Diley was defeated by a tough Waynesboro wrestler who was ranked high in AAA Pennsylvania rankings. He then dropped down to the consolation semi finals where he lost a controversial match by pinfall. Following that loss Jeremy wrestled for 5th and 6th place with a chance to earn a medal, but was decisioned 5-4 by a tough North Hagerstown High wrestler. Jeremy is now currently 29-6 with losses to AA, AAA/AAAA opponents.
“We are now gearing up for the district duals next Saturday (1/17) at Strasburg High. This will the 1st time the Panther wrestling team will have 10 of 14 weight classes filled. With 10 wrestlers and five days of practice time we will match up better with the district teams and have a chance to compete and finish high in the regular district standings.
“One last thing, I want to thank several parents who help keep the wrestling team fed and updated with stats: John Diley, who runs our stats, and Kevin and Hazel Day who have brought in numerous coolers full of food for the team. Thank you!!!!”
JP Wrestling – Report from Coach Dave Gillis: “The Junior Panthers wrestled well Saturday. Zack Armor, Devante Gray, Andrew Kopjanski, Logan Vest, Randolph Gray all enjoyed wins by pins while Erick Rodriguez was undefeated with 3 pins.”
